Ookla Recognises Econet Telecom Lesotho as Lesotho’s Fastest Mobile Network
MASERU, LESOTHO – 25 September 2026: Telecommunications powerhouse Econet Telecom Lesotho (ETL) has received international recognition for the performance of its mobile network after Ookla®, a global leader in connectivity intelligence and the company behind Speedtest®, recognised Econet as having the Fastest Mobile Network in Lesotho.
The recognition is based on independently collected, real-world consumer network performance data for 1H 2026, providing an objective view of customers’ mobile network experiences across Lesotho.
“We are excited to announce that Econet has the Fastest Mobile Network in Lesotho, validated by Speedtest Verified,” said Patrick Linder, VP of Telco Marketing Strategy and Design at Ookla. “This prestigious recognition highlights their network’s leading performance, and Ookla is proud to affirm this remarkable achievement.”
The achievement comes during one of Econet’s most extensive network modernisation programmes to date. Recent upgrades have seen the company almost triple its active 5G footprint while continuing to strengthen 4G coverage across the country.
These investments are aimed at improving the everyday experience of customers through faster browsing, smoother video streaming, more responsive gaming and digital services, clearer voice calls and improved access to connectivity.
Econet Telecom Lesotho’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Dennis Plaatjies, said the recognition reflects years of sustained investment in network infrastructure and the collective contribution of teams across the organisation.
“Receiving these Speedtest Awards from Ookla is a moment of immense pride for everyone at Econet. These accolades are far more than industry recognition – they are an independent validation of our commitment to continuously investing in a network that delivers exceptional experiences for our customers every day.”
Mr Plaatjies said the recognition also underscores the growing importance of connectivity to Lesotho’s digital development. As more aspects of everyday life move online, reliable connectivity is increasingly enabling businesses to grow, students to learn, families to stay connected and entrepreneurs to access new opportunities.
The recognition comes as demand continues to grow for high-speed broadband, digital financial solutions, AI-enabled services and other emerging technologies. Econet says it will continue expanding and modernising its network to respond to these changing customer needs and support the country’s digital future.
“While we celebrate this milestone, we see it as motivation to continue investing in our network and delivering even greater value for the people of Lesotho,” said Mr Plaatjies.
