Corona Virus Response
As a corporate citizen, Econet Telecom Lesotho becomes part of the solution when lives of communities that the company operates in are threatened.
The company contributed immensely towards the current Covid-19 pandemic through the provision of free telecommunications services to the autonomous organisation formed by the Government of Lesotho to coordinate and implement all Covid-19 response.
Econet Telecom Lesotho has been sponsoring rugby sport since its inception in Lesotho through a team called Maseru Kings under the Federation of Lesotho Rugby (FLR). A strong relationship between Econet and the Federation of Lesotho Rugby was formed through a request for one set of rugby kit.
This happened at the time when the national teams, Likatola & Bahlabani were non-existence and rugby sport was still foreign in Lesotho. Then, the national rugby teams came into being and the relationship strengthened. One set of rugby jersey multiplied to four. Then other rugby provisions requests like post guards, corner flags and the players’ formal attire had to be met.
Econet has since been supporting the Lesotho Rugby academy with monthly airtime. The main focus of the academy is to develop Lesotho rugby from grassroots. The academy is using rugby as a vehicle for life skills coaching at schools.
Social Services
Every year before Christmas day, Econet Telecom Lesotho through its management visits, provides meals and donates raw groceries at a chosen orphanage in the country. Christmas is a time for giving and spending quality time with families so, the purpose of the initiative is to serve delicious meals and spend time with the children living at the orphanages.
Econet group wholly owns a Foundation called HigherLife Foundation Lesotho (HLFL) which has been operating in Lesotho since the year 2011. Education is one of the six pillars that guide HLFL activities towards UN's SDG 4: Quality Education
